OVERVIEW

Goodreads is the world's largest site for readers and book recommendations, and their mission is to help people find and share books they love. I’ve recently become a more avid book reader, so I downloaded the app as a way to track my progress. While I love the concept of the app, I felt like the app could use a bit of an update. As a personal project, I gave the brand a refresh and mocked up some new layouts for their app. You can see the current app layout here.

This was a fun project that allowed me to dip my toes in the UI/UX world a bit, which is something I have been curious about recently!

LOGO

I wanted to keep the same general feel of the original logo as not to stray too far from the core brand, but give it a bit more of a modern feel. I kept a light beige color as a solid background color for the app icon (but removed the slight gradient), and then used a solid black in place of the previous dark brown monogram to add impact.

TYPOGRAPHY

I chose to use 2 different weights of Josefin Sans (Semi Bold and Light), a clean and legible font with a modern feel.

COLOR PALETTE

I wanted a color palette that was bold and bright, and colors that paired well with the beige color of the app background. Most of the app layout incorporated the beige throughout, and then I reserved the brighter colors for smaller details/buttons throughout the app, as well as illustrations on the profile page.

ILLUSTRATIONS

I created various illustrations that could be incorporated to different sections on the My Profile page. These icons would represent the following categories: Reading Challenges, Book Lists, Book Groups, Settings, Recommendations, and Add Friends.

EMAIL RE-DESIGN

I also re-designed a recent email from Goodreads using the new color palette, branding elements, and more custom illustrations.
